The “Rabbis Can Run” (RCR) program, first launched in 2017, offers rabbis a wonderful way to develop healthy habits. Offered to all Olami rabbis and open to community rabbis as well, the program trains rabbis to run a 10k, half, or full marathon. As a natural byproduct of this uplifting experience, rabbis learn to take better care of their own health.

 

Participating rabbis embark on an exciting health journey that includes three months of training, monthly phone calls, and personalized running charts. Our running coach checks in weekly with each rabbi to ensure spiritual, physical and emotional readiness for the marathon experience. Additionally, each rabbi takes on a modest fundraising goal, allowing congregations to support their rabbi’s investment in a healthy lifestyle.

 

“Rabbis Can Run,” which began with only three participants five years ago, has grown exponentially! Forty rabbis from 3 countries and 35 cities will be running in Olami’s “Rabbis can Run” marathon and health conference in February 2023, in Florida. Although the marathon marks the culmination of the training process, it signifies the beginning of a commitment to healthy exercise habits. To celebrate this achievement, rabbis enjoy an extra day in Florida following the race, giving them a chance to learn, recover, socialize, and set maintenance goals.

                                                                    

This race and conference creates a community of rabbis who prioritize taking care of their health, and who support one another in their health journeys.  As community role models, the dozens of rabbis who have participated in the Rabbis Can Run marathon over the past few years inspire their communities with their commitment to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Some rabbis have lost 80+ pounds due to their participation and no longer require certain health-related medication!
